Beyond The Curtain

Beyond The Curtain

This photo was take on November 12, 2016

Tyron Woodley warms up prior to walking out to face Stephen Wonderboy Thompson at UFC 205 in New York City at Madison Square Garden.

I try to give the athletes time alone and be as invisible as possible and this was just such a moment. As the time drew closer to the main event, Tyron got more and more focused so I waited outside the curtain for him to make the walk.

Peeking in from the outside made me realize that I was seeing something that no-one else on earth was going to be able to witness. I was photographing the first black UFC Champion that was about to fight and defend his belt in Madison Square Garden. Until this fight card the UFC could not hold fights in NY as it was illegal, so this was historic and now a part of not just MMA history but Black History as well and for me, that was a supremely important part of Tyron’s journey and legacy.

This is a Limited Edition Giclée on cotton fiber paper.

Photographer, Eric Williams, signed the artwork in the presence of a Notary Public.
