It was December 10, 2015 and I was documenting Luke Rockhold as he was getting in some fine tuning and cutting weight for his fight against Chris Weidman at UFC 194, when I met The Motown Phenom. I was crazy excited but I kept my shit together.
He was was sitting with Heidi Dean from the UFC, laughing as everyone does when they are in her company and he couldn’t have been nicer. We spoke for no more than a minute and I was a bigger fan of his when I left his presence. Even though it was brief, he gave me all of his attention, was completely engaged in the conversation even though it was tons of chaos around and I knew it was a matter of time that we going to work together when I walked away.
It would be 2 plus years later that we actually got to work together as we were both on the grind and the universe puts things together when you put in the work and when it’s time. You can’t force it or it will never work.
Kevin is methodical, very particular about the people he works with and as eager as I was to work with him, it was worth the wait. Don’t believe what you read or everything you see. He’s smart, knows what he wants, he plays the game well, and nothing will get in his way. I love working with athletes that are hyper focused because it sharpens my game. Makes me level up. Kevin is always in shape. Always game for an opponent. Always honing his craft and that is the sign and path of a champion. I got to watch a sparring session and then shoot some portraits of him and I’m really looking forward to working with him as he grows into a complete brand and a future UFC Champion.
