Junior Dos Santos wasn’t a big name when we met but he’d made a statement or two as he knocked out Fabricio Werdum, 1:20 seconds into the first round in his UFC debut and then dispatched of Stefan Struve 0.54 seconds into the first round of their fight, so I was anxious to photograph him.
His manager Ed Soares had been kind to me from the first day we met in the Valet of the Hilton Hotel at UFC 76. He called to let me know that Junior was heading to Dallas that night as he was fighting Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 103 and if I wanted to shoot him I needed to get to Blackhouse and make it happen fast, as I wouldn’t have a lot of time.
I got there at 6:30pm and it was already getting dark. I set up outside in the alley, Junior came out to say hello, wrapped his hands up and went to work, showcasing his fluidity with his punching style.
It was a quick 30 minutes and then he had to get ready to head to LAX.
2 years later Junior Dos Santos captured the Heavyweight Title on the debut of the UFC of Fox in Anaheim, California. It was the knock out of the night, coming in at 1:04 of the first round.
