This photo was taken on March 1, 2008 in Columbus, Ohio

I was documenting Dan Henderson’s fight week for UFC 82 in Columbus, Ohio and it was freezing cold everywhere we went. I think everyone on his team was missing California but I can tell you this…the food was excellent. I was fortunate to have worked with Dan during his camp so there was a comfort level where he no longer paid attention to my presence.

That comfort level is called trust and it’s what I work to establish with athletes as a photographer. It is the greatest thing you can have with a subject because that’s when beautiful moments and stories are shaped.

“Dan sat down, looked me directly in my face and said..

“Uuuuuuuuum, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were still here. I would have ordered you some food. “

I said it’s all good, I’m not hungry. I’m just happy that I get to smell it and watch you enjoy it.

Asparagus, Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and a box of Carr’s Table Water Crackers all which he devoured 3 hours before he faced off against Anderson Silva for the Middleweight Title. I shot this photo as he took his first bite and deep inside I realized that I actually was hungry.

Dan is widely regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, having defeated a total of twenty-one MMA world champions across four major MMA promotions (UFCPRIDE FCStrikeforce, and RINGS) and it’s cool to look back on the time’s I got to document special parts of his life.

This is a Limited Edition Giclée on cotton fiber paper.

The photographer Eric Williams, signed the artwork in the presence of a Notary Public.
